“Approaching Portal,” a new work in torch-cut steel, fused bronze, and glass enamel by American artist James Bearden. The glass enamel-encrustedand heavily textured ovoid ring—which continues Bearden’s fascination with coral and marine life— is perched atop a sinuously arboreal tri-footed base. One of Bearden’s first works using this warmly sanguinary color—a departure from the monochromatic, metallic, and cool-toned palette normally associated with his work. Technically virtuosic, the enamel has to be applied in brief expressionist bursts.
